Second half of salmon fishing season on Varzina river has passed without especial ups-and-downs. In second half of July fish has overcome the first falls, thanks to the reports from Trout camp, occurred in riverheads. In the lower part of Varzina river the biting was stable enough, unpretentious for the exclusiveness, but nevertheless with pleasant inclusions in the form of 20lb individuals. 30lb samples also were met in August (look the future reports on trophies). Fresh fish, basically grills, were caught up to the end of August. Infrequently, but  stable. Real Autumn run, but saidly, wasn`t registered in catches. The water level kept stably low, without considerable fluctuations, but  hasn`t fallen to an extreme mark of last season. The temperature in the river also was within norm, and hasn`t turned to boiled water. As a whole weather favored to fishing, not taking into account several storm and rainy days, but how to  imagin Kola without them. August and September also pleased with absence of considerable quantity of  blood-sicking mosquitous. Summing up, we are compelled to recognize that the fishing season was far not the best for all the history of the Lodge existence. Though trophies, usual for each season on Varzina river, have been caught, quantity of fish that came into the river this year was considerably smaller. And there were no obvious visual factors affected this fact  noticed. Only one phrase come into  mind "fishing is fishing", so we hope that the next year will be much more productive.

WEEK#6 (04/07/2010 - 09/07/2010).

Week passed without any extreme events or catches. Up to Varzina waterfalls pools are full with fish, but unfortunately with inactive lifestyle. There is vigorous grills run. This week many clients turned to trout fishing , which was rather productive both in river mouth and in its upper parts. Fish havent still been noticed  upper the waterfalls, though level and temperature of the water suggest its presence there. Water is already low and you can easily forget about sinking line. Fascinating fishing for various dry  hitch flies proceeds.

WEEK #5 (27/06/2010 - 02/072010).

The week has passed without especial jumps of interest from representatives of fish fauna. Water has got warm and has fallen so that there were no necessity in using anything but floating lines. Fishing on hitch flies has begun. This fact cannot but please. With all modesty of catches, numerous attacks on hitch flies refresh fishing greatly. There is still no information that fish has overcome waterfalls. Almost all kellts have run to the sea, but two first pink salmon were caught in Drozdovka that is too early for this time of year. In the mouth of Varzina river sea trout were caught rather productively. Midge and mosquitoes, which populations did not suffer much in comparison to fish one, appear.

WEEK #4 (19/06/2010 - 26/06/2010).

On Monday (21/06/2010) at Varzinas Silver Pool one of the representatives of the French Republic, it was his first visit to our lodge, broke far ahead. He managed to hook, fight for 35 min and land 109 cm in length salmon, that had just entered the river. At dinner, traditionally this lucky beggar was let into Varzina club "30 lb", as evidenced by the shiny golden badge of member of the club on the lapel of his plaid jacket. On Tuesday (22/06/2010) bell of  Varzina club "30 pounds" was heard once again in the surroundings of the Lodge. At this time, with dizzying margin another French fisherman, a friend and companion of discussed above one, came forward. The event, that cooled the already chilly relationship between the British and the French delegations, took place at Finn pool.  111 cm long and 16 kg in weight salmon was neatly brought on the bank and caught into landing net. In the evening a group of English fishermen sang "La Marseillaise" with mourning on their faces. It seems that the UK  had not experienced such defeats since the days of Napoleon. (Pictures of French monsters were made on film camera, so we are waiting for pictures from France and now we publish another photos of much more smaller samples). The week passed under pressure of expectations, fueled by landing of two fish over 30lb (109 cm and 111 cm - 16 kg in weight) caught by two French fishermen and frustration at the sight of huge kelts in landing net (the largest 108cm) plus unexpectedly caught two grills. There is still not so many fish, though she reached both waterfalls at Drozdovka and Varzina. Undisputed market leader is Finnpool, the remaining pools released fish in amounts that can hardly be called wholesale. The water falls along with the mood of the majority of flyfishers, darkened at the same time by absolute success of some lucky guys. However, a few fish, leaving tails beyond one meter, is not a joke.

WEEK #3 (12/06/2010 - 19/06/2010).

On June 12th to the Main Lodge on the river Varzina arrived a mixed group of clients (Russia, Ukraine, Iceland, Switzerland, Germany, Italy). On the very first day of fishing, fresh trophy samples were caught. What is particularly curious about this fact is that the first fish were caught almost simultaneously (Sunday 13/6/2010) in Varzina, Drozdovka and Sidorovka rivers.
The uniqueness of the situation lies in the fact that, as a rule, the statistics shows that during last 10-15 years, the first fresh fish is caught in Varzina and only then, after 7-10 days it is found in Drozdovka and Sidorovka. It seems that either the previous group was not ready for heavy fishing conditions, or severe weather conditions have made their adjustments to the fish run.
So, first fresh fish was caught at Finnpool. After this it started to occur over all Home pool and low part of Drozdovka, but not in large numbers and without any preferences of determine pots. At Penka there were good bites of spent pike. Water dropped rapidly and started getting warmer. Long Walk pool and Boulders did not present fresh fish yet, only kelts and osenka (autumn run). Water level in Varzina is very comfortable. All home pools are working, except for Mainstream, where it is still too fast. Fish comes up very rare, fish run is almost unseen.

WEEK #2 (06/06/2010 - 12/06/2010).

On 6th June second group from St. Petersburg arrived to Varzina Main Lodge. Cold weather and rains continues almost for the whole week. Water is dropping down, but the level of Varzina is still quite high. Bitting is unchangable. Few kelts on Finnpool and almost total lack of them , as well as of the rest fish, at Home pool. Two days at Drozdovka brought about five kelts and one autumn run fish (Osenka). The water level there is still high.
Fresh fish is not observed, although the water in Penka, for example, is normal and warmed up to the temperature of 6 degrees. Trout is seldom. Pike does not bite. No fish yet.

WEEK#1 (30/05/2010 - 04/06/2010).

At the beginning of the week warm weather gave way to pouring rains, that did not stop for two days. At home pool there was no salmon. Not any. A little bit trout bites at the mouth of Penka. The first day on Finpool brought more than two dozen kelts and trout. There were no either autumn run (Osenka) or fresh fish. On the second day at Finpool three times less fish were parked. There were still no fresh fish. There is no Osenka either. Home pool kept silence. Water level was above the average. There is not a sign of fresh fish in spite of the time period.

Season 2003 proved again the high quality of the typical Varzina experience. After the runs got started all four rivers fished extremely well all season through.

The early season in June was quite different than what we have used to see during several previous seasons with early summers. The weather and water remained relatively cold until the second week of July and water levels were also high. Generally, this season was close to long time average at these latitudes.

Like always, some large fish entered Varzina during the first weeks of June. Water was still quite cold and the fish were moving up slowly through the deepest pools. Even though the combined fishing effort was not very serious, several quite nice spring fish were caught up to 12 kilos or 26+ lbs. Typically the slightly warmer flow from Penka attracted most early fish.

When water warmed up a bit by the end of June there were lots of large fish in all the pools in lower Varzina & Penka. The take clearly improves when the water temperature goes up to 6 degrees Centigrade (43 F). The warming whether melted most of the snow pack during this time and while the rivers always run clear here, they rose clearly above the norm for this time of the year.

During the first week of July conditions resembled those of mid-June during the season 2002. Water temps ranged from 8 to 10 deg. Centigrade (45-50 F) and the level was almost too high for the floating line.

Grilse were already running and quite willing to come to flies fished close to the surface. The bigger fish seemed still to like deeper and slower presentations. Fast sinking heads (up to 300 grains) produced very well in the deeper holes of the Upper Finnpool and the Big Falls Pool as lots of salmon stacked in relatively small holding areas sheltered by fast surface current.

It seems that large part of the biggest fish escaped most of the fishing effort to the reaches above the Falls as most of the salmon landed were around the 20 lbs mark. Some test fishing was done right above the Falls with very little to show but when trout fishing started after mid-June in the upper river, very large salmon were much in evidence.

The sport remained remarkably consistent all July through. The first three weeks all had excellent catches of good sized salmon up to 12 kilos or 26+ lbs. During the latter part of July the hot weather reached also this remote corner and even though the catch numbers remained high, grilse made up larger part of the catch.

When we look at the numbers for the whole season, the salmon/grilse ration was again 1/2, i.e. out of three fish landed two were grilse and one was full grown salmon. Not a bad figure, Id say and naturally during the early weeks the catch consisted almost completely of large fish.

During the season the accessory rivers Penka, Sidorovka and Drosdovka were regularly fished with good results. By early July the main run had filled Drosdovka pools up to the Falls. Despite the very visibly stacked mass of salmon high flows and turbulent water prevented effective fishing of the Falls themselves until mid-July. The lower pools produced many fish as well as the whole length of the Sidorovka.

The Varzina Trout Camp opened customarily after mid-July with excellent results from the very beginning. The weather varied as it only can at these latitudes of open tundra. Again the best fishing in July was with smaller imitative flies of mostly caddis type. In August even very large streamers were effective for both the bigger trout and the large, territorial salmon.

The total catch of trout over 20 inches was 451 quite staggering number for a six weeks season. The whole trout count for the fishery was officially 998 but this also includes sea trout.

The biggest brown trout for last season went up to 29 inches but great many were in the range of 25 to 28 inches. Very respectable wild fish, solid and typically very heavy for their length.

All in all, the season 2003 over 900 salmon were landed, with good average weight of 7,3 kilos or 16 lbs for adult salmon.

Season 2003 salmon run is on!!

Finally the weather warmed up and it looks like normal summer again. Heavy fresh salmon from 15 to 25+ lbs are still running strongly with the first grilse starting to show around.

There are some VERY large salmon mixed in the run of the lesser fish this year. None has been landed yet but as water levels continue to slowly drop and the fish get more stationary we can expect to see some extremely exciting fishing.

Most of the action is still on the lowest river miles with Finnpool and the adjacent pools fishing very well.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last week (June 14th-20th) produced 90 salmon with 23 sea liced absolutely fresh beauties included. Again the best was 12 kilos or 26+ lbs.

Weather conditions have slowly improved with both air (around 10 C/50 F) and water (around 6 C/ 43 F) temperatures again resembling normal spring conditions.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bright and silvery are those wonderful spring fish that boldly swim up Varzina and Penka. Biggest salmon landed during the season opening has been a fine fish of about 12 kilos (26+ lbs). The first big run entered the rivers around June 13th.

Weather conditions are at the moment a bit on the cool side, which is quite normal for this time of the year on the northern Kola Peninsula coastal area. Snow covers only some northern hillsides and valleys.

All the rivers run clear at optimal early season fishing levels. Water temperatures are low ranging from 2 to 4 deg. Centigrade (35-40 F) but they are slowly rising. Lower Varzina and Penka rivers are typically the first to yield fresh salmon. Sidorovka and Drozdovka will join up shortly.

New information will appear here shortly as we get updated information from the Lodge.

Season 2002 proved to be one of the best in record, if not the very best of all times. All four rivers fished extremely well all season through.
The early season in June repeated the pattern from previous season. The light snow pack melted early and the main run of large salmon went up the rivers in relatively low water conditions.

The first two weeks of June had the first fresh fish in the lowest river miles. Water was still quite cold and the fish were moving up slowly. With only a few rods fishing the river yielded 26 large salmon in the 30 lbs range.

During the last two weeks in June high tides and nicely overcast weather helped schools of fresh fish to run the rapids. Fresh salmon in record numbers moved up to the Big Falls and filled all the pools in the lowest five miles of Varzina.

Conditions were ideal for floating line fishing and the salmon were on very aggressive mood. The bulk of the run consisted of fish that had spent 2 or 3 winters feeding at sea and the average size was 6-7 kilos (13-15 lbs) with many fish over 10 kilos or 22 lbs.

The best catches for individual rods were very high with the best rod during the last week of June tallying 49 adult salmon not a single grilse included!

The smaller rivers Penka, Sidorovka and Drosdovka fished very well, too. As usual, Penka had a very good early run in June with most fish around 5-8 kilos. The clear pools of Sidorovka filled with running fish during the last week of June. Drosdovka followed suite with record numbers of large salmon sighted at the Falls Pool.

In early July good summer weather finally arrived and the water temperature rose making the fish active. Grilse started running in increasing numbers but this didnt discourage the larger fish from the taking mood. The first salmon appeared above the Varzina Falls during the first week of July, about one week earlier then normal.

Average catch size remained at good level while the numbers accumulated to high levels. Average catch per rod was 11-12 salmon with average weight of 10-12 lbs.

Water levels dropped during the latter part of July but this didnt prevent fresh fish from running. High tides and overcast weather during the first week of August brought fresh, sea-liced salmon fish quickly to the middle reaches of both Varzina and Sidorovka. This stirred up the previously run fish and very aggressive takes were the norm.

Salmon took well all flies from large streamers to small wets flies and dry Bombers. The best weekly rod caught 31 salmon, full half of these fresh fish.

Salmon/grilse ratio was about 40/60. In the major holding pools it was reversed even up to 80% of the catch consisting of large salmon.
During August the autumn run continued and the fishing remained good for combined salmon, sea trout and brown trout forays. While the average size remained around 10 lbs large salmon up to 31 lbs were also landed.

The Varzina Trout Camp opened around mid-July with excellent results. In addition to the plentiful big brown trout many large salmon were caught from the very start.

As usual, only trout over 50 cm in length were counted. The average length was around 57 cm with much bigger fish in evidence. Typically the best fishing in July was with smaller imitative flies. In August larger streamer flies worked well for aggressive territorial fish.

The first week of August was quite representative for the Trout Camp with 95 trout over 50 cm landed in addition to 25 salmon for 8 rods.
All in all, the season 2002 over 800 salmon were landed, with good average weight of 6,5 kilos or 14 lbs for adult salmon and 5,8 kilos or 12,8 lbs for all salmon including grilse.

IT WAS A GREAT MILLENNIUM SEASON

The year 2000 season was one of the best we have ever had as large fish that hatched mainly in 1992 returned to the rivers in good numbers. For three weeks the average catch was over 11 lbs. and around ten fish per rod.

We were also able to initiate a lot of new members to our 20+ pounds club. As the year 1993 baby boom was even better than in 1992, our next season should be exceptional.

The best week (27) produced 12 fish weighing more than 20 lbs. Note that the main Lodge was closed for some weeks in late July and early August. During the later part of the season most rods fished for brown trout with good results. The biggest trout measured was 32 inches long

Season 2000

September 11th

The season 2000 is now closed. The season was a successful one, new pictures, statistics and other features will appear here soon!

August 15th

Brown trout fishing is again excellent. Anglers have landed lots of big fish from the upper river reaches, up to 75 fish over 20 inches weekly. So far the biggest has been over 28 inches long and well into double figures in weight.
As the autumn approaches the average size of brown trout will increase as more and more pre-spawning fish keep moving into the river areas from the lakes. Many 30 inchers are then seen but landing them takes both luck and good angling skills.

July 16th

More and more big fish enter the Varzina system. Fresh, sea-liced salmon of 30 lbs landed!
As the main run of grilse sweeps upriver the average size of salmon grows smaller as the daily catches grow bigger.
The first look at the trout fishery in the upper reaches of the Varzina system yielded amongst other fish a 10 pound brown trout. As the waters warm up trout will move into the rivers from the lakes area.

July 10th

This season seems to develop into one of the best in history. Optimal water levels for fly and a very strong run of big fish in all rivers make it just great!
The grilse are in but the average size is still very high (11½ lbs/5,1 kg for the first week of July).
We also got the first two female members for the Varzina 20 lbs Club. Congratulations!
High tides bring in more fresh fish all the time.

June 22nd

Running salmon on every river of the system. Daily catches averaging 4-5 big fish per angler.
Testfishing on the Sidorovka: Optimum water level for floating or intermediate line. Water temperature 10º Centigrade (50º F). Bright fish (10 -20 lbs) from various mid-river pools and Seapool.
First day of fishing on the Drozdovka produced a 25 lbs fresh salmon.
Finnpool on the Varzina continued to be very productive yesterday with six fresh fish of over 12 pounds, the biggest 18 pounds with sea lice still on.

June 21st

Water levels running normal, no more snow! Summer came quickly and early this year, leaves are full already!
Water temperatures: Varzina 6º Centigrade (43º F), Penka  8º Centigrade (46º F).
All lower pools are full of fish and the fishing is fast and furious.
Some records:
Week 24 average weight 6,25 kg (14 lbs); best fish 18,5 lbs
Week 25 average so far 6,6 kg (14,7 lbs); best fish 21 lbs

June 11th

The first fresh salmon have arrived! A cracking 17 lbs springer was the first fish of the season followed by an 18 pounder from the Penka. Water levels are normal and the snow has disappeared almost completely. Everything is ready for another perfect season!

May 27th

Guides & personnel left for the Lodge to open the Millennium Season!

Prospects

During the winter 1999/2000 Kola Peninsula had an exceptionally heavy pack of snow, which spells high water at least for the early season. Nothing new at these latitudes.
The Varzina area is not much affected by the spring runoff. The numerous lakes and marshy areas at the top of the system easily absorb most of the melting snow and release it slowly during the summer months. They also take good care of the water clarity: the Varzina complex never runs muddy.
The rivers will run a bit high, no doubt, but this usually means good runs of salmon from the very start of the season.
As soon as we know more about the current conditions, this page will be updated.

Season 1999

August 29th

Varzina brown trout fishing is the stuff that all fishermens dreams are made of.
Last week the Lodge recorded the incredible figure of 183 brown trout at least 20 inches landed for eight rods. The average fish was 22-24 inches long and very few if any were smaller than 18 inches. Many fish were in the range from 25 to 27 inches and some even up to 30 inches. These are also really heavy fish well in the double figures in weight. The best daily catches were 25 to 30 fish!
In addition to the big brutes landed even bigger fish were seen and hooked. Really big fish were lost after being played for 15 minutes and heavy leaders snapped when speeding fish emptied reels of backing.
Also upper Sidorovka and Drosdovka systems yielded splendid trophy fish up to 28 inches. Several new areas were explored with success. The potential of the whole fishery seems to be greater than anyone could hope for.
Look for great new pictures and final statistics in September!
Late season salmon fishing is also quite good. Fresh fish are entering especially Sidorovka and Drosdovka systems with every high tide.
Most bright salmon are mid-sized fish from 10 to 15 lbs but bigger ones in the 20-25 lbs bracket have also been landed.

August 12th

Mid-July was the best time of the Varzina salmon season. Lots of fish was caught with best weekly bags more than twenty salmon and grilse.
Both Varzina and Sidorovka fished very well. The best fly was Golden Killer, as usual. Towards the end of July dry flies gave good catches, including big fish. The biggest on a dry Bomber was a 98 cents (38,5 inches) long salmon from the Varzina Finnpool.
The Varzina season has now several weeks to go. Water temperature is now about 12 degrees Centigrade with cold nights likely to bring it down. Water levels are a bit lower than last year, about normal for this time of the year.
Its now time between summer and autumn salmon runs. Very few fresh fish are coming in but resident fish have filled all pool. They are typically very willing to show themselves but they are not very good takers.
Trout fishing is very good even by Varzina standards. Even before the main Lodge has started trout fishing, the Trout Camp has recorded astonishing 150 trout over 50 cents (20 inches) including 30 over 60 cents (24 inches). The biggest three fish were taped at 74, 72 and 70 cents. The biggest arctic chars have been 60 cents fish.
Gary and Jason Borger are coming in late August to experience the Varzina trout fishing. I`ll bet that even those experienced fishermen are going to be surprised!
Most of the best trout fishing has been from the surface during caddis hatches. Streamers work usually better with the really big fish that are just now starting coming down from the Lake Enozero.
Sea run browns are also gathering at the river mouths. Specially the Drosdovka Sea Pool has huge numbers of trout averaging 50 cents.

July 12th

The early run was truly a very good one and especially the Penka river fished very well. The famous Varzina Finnpool produced many fish even before reaching optimal fly fishing level.
Very unseasonal hot spell got the whole Northern Europe sweating during the latter part of June. Even the Varzina area got it`s share of this very warm weather. There were days when the Lodge logged shade temperatures up to 30 degrees Centigrade!
All the Varzina area rivers warmed up very quickly, which naturally affected also the salmon. Hot and very sunny days meant that the best catches were taken at nighttime under the midnight sun.
Floating lines and small flies were much in demand (as well as mosquito repellant!) For some odd reason that only salmon know dry flies brought no response in spite of perfect conditions.
By the beginning of July fresh salmon were hooked from all pools up to the Big Falls Pool above the Lake Filipov. Some fast moving grilse came to the river but most salmon were still fish from 10 to 15 pounds. Several monsters well over 20 lbs were hooked but long lines releases were common.
4th of July brought change with much cooler weather and favorable taking conditions. Fishing in both Sidorovka and Drosdovka rivers got going after relatively slow start. Salmon came in large schools which quickly filled the lower pools and reached even the uppermost tributaries within a few days. Specially Drosdovka was again blessed with very large salmon.
The first brown trout expeditions showed that the stocks have wintered well and promises for the coming season are very good indeed.

June 11th

Pre-season time still here in the north-coast of the Kola Peninsula. Yesterday the first big schools of large spring salmon arrived. These fish easily average 15 lbs with many far bigger with in the mix. The biggest so far has been 21 lbs.
It seems that the main tributary, Penka, is warming up a little bit faster than the main river. Most of the salmon seem to follow this slightly warmer water, as lots of fish have been seen in the lower Penka.
We expect a great season. Welcome all old and new friends!
